War Thunder Ah Shit Here We Go Again M1 Abrams
I'd similar to preface this post by making it absolutely clear I am Non a "freeaboo" or "burgerboo" (or whatsoever other silly names made upwardly to depict pro U.s. people on the sub). I desire a balanced fair game, where all nations tin can pose a legitimate threat to one some other. I don't want revenge balance, I don't want season of the month vehicles. I have many rank Vi/7 tanks including the Leopard 2A5, M1A1, and Challenger. I've played War Thunder since 2014 and take a ton of experience in tiptop tier (over 600 games in the 2A4/A5 and over 1400 in my Abrams variants).
And then with my credibility hopefully established, lets move onto to what you lot clicked for. We'll examine the M1A2 in the three main areas of tank performance (armor, firepower, mobility) and compare information technology with current pinnacle tier tanks in War Thunder.
M1A2 Armor: The Armor upgrade of the M1A2 will arguably be the largest impact of its addition. The tank received Second Generation DU armor on the turret which increased protection to 650mm+, compared to the base of operations M1A1's 450mm. Its unclear if the Second Gen DU armor offers whatsoever protection advantages over the first; but fifty-fifty if we take the base of operations 650mm figure, its still a substantial comeback over the M1A1. It ways that the turret face up of the A2 will exist well-nigh bulletproof by whatever rounds we accept in game. The Abrams will no longer be vulnerable to what I consider its biggest weakness: being ammo racked past a turret cheek penetration. An armor upgrade like this will put the M1 in line with its competitors in game, as the Leopard 2A5, Challenger ii, T-80U, and Leclerc all have defacto invulnerable turret cheeks. Yet, this armor improvement doesn't come up without a cost.
M1A2 Mobility: The M1A2 is a bit heavier than the A1. The DU armor and electronics pushed the weight to a base of operations 62.v tons. This is only around 3.5 tons more than than the A1, simply it will likely have a noticeable bear on on mobility. Thankfully, it retains the 68 km/h top speed of the M1A1; and then it won't be a slower tank only it may feel slightly less responsive (it really only depends how Gaijin models it in game). Personally, I think the trade off is worth it. The M1A1 is already towards the higher end of mobility in pinnacle tier and I retrieve a minimal subtract won't curtail its effectiveness at all.
M1A2 Firepower: Here'southward where it gets interesting. The M1A2 retains the M256 120mm Smooth bore of the A1, but it received newer more than powerful ammunition. Realistically, we have 2 options for its superlative tier round: the M829A1 or M829A2. A1 entered service in 1988 and has around 700mm of penetration at 2km. This round was unable to penetrate Kontakt 5 armor in tests at anything bar point blank range. A2 went into service in 1992 and had 740mm of penetration at 2km, and could defeat Kontakt five ERA. IMO M829A2 might be a little too much for War Thunder right at present as information technology would effectively make armor irrelevant for any Kontakt 5 equipped Russian tank; the T-72B 1989 and subsequently T-80 variants would get clubbed by this circular. Then M829A1 could exist a tier 3 upgrade, and M829A2 could be added in the future if the tank needs it.
Intangibles: This brings me to the fire control system, which is the stand out feature of the M1 Abrams to this day. The A2 has a standard magnification gun sight which can cycle betwixt 3x, 6x and 13x. But, it too has a digitally enhanced sight pick of 25x to 50x times magnification. Allow me say that again: 50. Times. Magnification. This gun sight (in conjunction with the automated windage and elevation) essentially turns the M1A2 into a hyper accurate computerized sniper burglarize that tin can blap enemy tanks at 3km with ease. Even if we forgo the auto lead power of the FCS, the visual clarity and precision afforded by a 50x zoom scope cannot exist overstated. If implemented correctly, the A2 would the best tank in the game at range. Full cease. I think this would be an interesting niche for the tank to make full; non terrible in close range, but first-class if you're disciplined and keep distance betwixt you lot and the enemy.
So, that'southward it. That's my example for calculation the M1A2. In closing I'd but like to add that the A2 was adopted into service in 1990. The same year as the Type 90, and over 4 years before than the Leopard 2A5 and C1 Ariete. Don't even get me started on the Chally ii, which entered service in 98'. So if we're being honest, chronologically the M1A2 fits right into War Thunder'due south electric current time zone for top tier. And, balance wise, I think it'd exist an awesome addition.
